Background

Internships have increasingly become a prerequisite to finding employment. Millions of young people worldwide do internships in hopes to gain work-related skills and eventually access decent employment. Today’s interns represent the workforce of the future. Therefore, it is crucial that internships are properly designed to provide a meaningful learning experience and prepare young people for their entry into the labour market. As highlighted in the 2016 UN World Youth Report, poorly designed internships may also run the risk of turning into a poverty trap and, especially when unpaid, may exacerbate social inequality by barring access to those with insufficient means to afford them. In order to prevent this, it is crucial that internships are designed in a way that make them accessible to all and provides young people with meaningful tasks, appropriate supervision, adequate social and labour rights, including basic financial support.

International Interns’ Day worldwide

International Interns’ Day is a global day to raise awareness about the importance of improving the accessibility and labour conditions of internships. Lead by the European Youth Forum and InternsGoPro, and supported by the European Commission, the day is celebrated since 2015 on 10 November and articulated in a number of public events in Brussels, Madrid, Paris, Budapest, Geneva and other cities.

International Interns’ Day in Geneva – 3 November 2017

In Geneva, the event will be held on 3 November 2017 and will be organized by the Fair Internship Initiative, with the support of several Geneva-based intern organizations. The Fair Internship Initiative is a youth initiative based in Geneva, New York and Vienna, advocating for fair access to internships and fair working conditions for interns in the United Nations system.
